Loyola Marymount University and The William Glasser Institute

For the past two years LMU and the WGI have been in dialogue about preserving the work of Dr. Glasser and planning for the future of choice theory and reality therapy. This dialogue has resulted in the formation of The William Glasser Institute for Research in Public Mental Health. The goal of the LMU Institute is to promote, study and research the implications of mental health as a public issue. A major emphasis will center on research across 13 dimensions: counseling and therapy; relationships; quality schools; business and management; child advocacy; criminal justice and corrections; volunteerism and giving; addictions; violence, abuse and trauma; health and wellness; ministry and faith traditions; and finally world peace and global relations.

Other initiatives include: infusion of choice theory and practice at the university, training faculty and staff, establishing a professorship dedicated to research and public mental health. These challenging and futuristic goals are congruent with the university mission and spring from the mission of The William Glasser Institute.

Genuine excitement and assurance filled the room when these ideas were presented to the WGI conference and to faculty members in Colorado Springs. Many thanks to Dr. Cheryl Grills, Chair of the Department of Psychology,  Dr. Cherie Schenck, Senior Director, LMU Extension,  Joan E. Pohas, Executive Director of Planned Giving & Principal Gifts, and  Bradley Smith, Coordinator, Public Health Services for presenting and clarifying this visionary program.

Loyola Marymount University, a Jesuit institution, enjoys the highest reputation as an institution of higher learning and community service. The connection between LMU and WGI points toward a promising and lasting societal impact for choice theory and reality therapy.
